বাংলা কথাসাহিত্যের অন্যতম জাদুকর সমরেশ মজুমদার। তাঁর মতে প্রথম সত্যিকারের গল্প ‘পরিচিত দৃশ্যের পদাবলী’। সেই গল্প দিয়ে শুরু হয়ে কালানুক্রমিকভাবে সজ্জিত ৪৯টি গল্প একত্রিত হয়েছে এই গ্রন্থে।
