একথা আজ বলার অপেক্ষা রাখে না যে, সত্যজিতের প্রধান সৃষ্টির জগৎ চলচ্চিত্রের জগৎ। এখানে তাঁর সিদ্ধি বিশ্বমানের এবং অবিস্মরণীয়। এমন একজন স্রষ্টা যখন সাহিত্যসৃষ্টিতেও শ্রেষ্ঠ হয়ে ওঠেন, তখন আমাদের বিস্ময়ের অন্ত থাকে না। আমরা শ্রদ্ধার সঙ্গে লক্ষ করি সিনেমার সঙ্গে তিনি সাহিত্যভাবনাতেও ব্যাপ্ত হয়েছিলেন। মগ্ন হয়েছিলেন অন্য এক দিগন্ত রচনায়। বাংলা দেশের এক সম্মানিত সাহিত্যভবন ও সাহিত্যপরিবারের ঐতিহ্য ছিল সত্যজিতের রক্তে। এর সঙ্গে মিশে গিয়েছিল তাঁর প্রতিভা, মেধা, ব্যক্তিস্বাতন্ত্র্য, কল্পনা, উদ্ভাবনী মন আর অকৃত্রিম গদ্যশৈলী। গল্প রচনার সূচনালগ্ন থেকেই সত্যজিৎ পাঠকের মন জয় করে নিয়েছিলেন। শুরু থেকেই তিনি লিখেছেন গল্পের মধ্যে জমাটি গল্প। এদিক থেকে বোধ হয় তিনি স্যার ফিলিপ সিডনির তত্ত্বে বিশ্বাসী। সর্বপ্রথমে যা গল্প, সব শেষেও তা গল্প। কোনও জটিল তত্ত্ব নয়, ছোটগল্পে তিনি খুঁজে নিয়েছেন মুক্তি ও বিস্ময়। সুধী সমালোচকের ভাষায়, ‘আমাদের খণ্ডিত অস্তিত্বের সমস্যাসঙ্কুল জগৎটা সেখানে মাথা চাড়া দেয় না। তার বদলে পাই মহাকাশের সংকেত, অতল সমুদ্রের ডাক, মরু বা মেরুর ইশারা অথবা মানুষের, একান্তই ছাপোষা সাধারণ মানুষের অশেষত্বের ঠিকানা। প্রযুক্তি পারঙ্গম দ্বিতীয় বিশ্বযুদ্ধোত্তর পৃথিবীতে যে-মানুষের গল্প তিনি শোনান সে-মানুষ গাণিতিক সিদ্ধির জগতে গণিতের অতীত মানুষ।’জগৎ ও জীবনকে সত্যজিৎ এমনই শিল্পীস্বভাবে দেখেছেন আগাগোড়া। ফলে তাঁর গল্পের কিশোরপাঠ্য ও বয়স্কপাঠ্যের বিভাজন রেখা মুছে গেছে অনায়াসে। সব বয়সী পাঠককে তাঁর গল্পের জগতে সত্যজিৎ টেনে আনতে পেরেছেন। এই সিদ্ধি ও কৃতিত্ব খুব কম সংখ্যক গল্প-লেখকেরই আছে।সময়জয়ী এই গল্পগুলি যে-ভাষায় সত্যজিৎ লিখেছেন তা একান্তভাবে তাঁর নিজের ভাষা। তাঁর গদ্যশৈলী অননুকরণীয়। ‘এ গদ্যে কোথাও ফেনা নেই। পাতাবাহার নেই। নিষ্পত্র অথচ ফলবতী লতার মতো মনোজ্ঞ সে গদ্য।’ আবার শব্দ দিয়ে তৈরি করেছেন ছবি। প্রয়োজন মতো সে-ছবিতে রং ধরিয়ে চাক্ষুষ করেও তুলেছেন।সত্যজিতের আশিতম জন্মবর্ষপূর্তিতে শঙ্কু ও ফেলুদার কাহিনীগুলি বাদ দিয়ে তাঁর সমস্ত গল্প, দুটি উপন্যাস ও একটি নাট্যকাহিনী নিয়ে একত্রে প্রকাশিত হল ‘গল্প ১০১’।
