1947. There is so much talk about the partition of Bengal and Punjab. But history seems to be much more silent about Sindh!
Sindh was not divided into two like Bengal or Punjab. Rather, the entire province went to Pakistan. There was no other Sindh on the other side of the barbed wire for the people who left their homeland. There was only a struggle to learn to live anew in another city, in another language!
Many years later, Bollywood’s famous film star Madhura Advani was murdered at the Ghat of Benares. She had reportedly gone to Karachi before her death. While searching for her connection to the murder with that trip, a forgotten chapter of the Partition begins to open up.
There are many sources scattered in the history of Chaushatti Ghat, an ancient alley of Kashi. The story of Hatti Vidyalankar comes up, as does the history of Raja Pratapaditya. The search for the past from the distant Shardapith of Kashmir to the land left by Sindh, the more complicated the murder mystery of the present becomes!
What happened to the lives of some people who left Sindh? Why, after so many years, has the search for their lost past become urgent in the investigation of a high-profile murder in Kashi?
This novel by Rudra-Priyam deals with the upheaval of partition, the identity and legacy of women, the determination to survive, and the people buried in the shadows of history.
