হঠাৎ দেখলেন সেই নির্জন পথে দাঁড়িয়ে একটি আট-দশ বছরের মেয়ে তাঁর দিকে তাকিয়ে। বিভূতিভূষণও দেখছেন কিশোরী কন্যাটিকে।
বন্ধু যোগেন্দ্রনাথ সিংহকে পরে বলেছিলেন, ‘মাথার চুল উস্কোখুস্কো, চোখে উদ্দেশহীন চাহনি, অথচ মুখে দুষ্টুমির চিহ্ন। মনে হয় স্কুল থেকে পালিয়েছে, নয়তো বাড়ি থেকে মেরে তাড়িয়েছে। এখানে দাঁড়িয়ে নতুন কিছু দুষ্টুমির মতলব অটিছে।”
তাঁর মনে হয়েছিল ওই কিশোরী কন্যার দু’চোখের ভেতর এক ব্যথাভরা জগৎ লুকিয়ে।
মনে হয়েছিল, এই মেয়েটিকে তিনি যদি তাঁর উপন্যাসে ঠাঁই না দেন, সে লেখা হবে ব্যর্থ এবং নিষ্প্রাণ। পাণ্ডুলিপি ছিঁড়ে ফেললেন।
ডায়েরিতে তাঁর বর্ণনা পাওয়া যায়-
“মেয়েটিকে নিয়ে নতুন করে আবার লিখতে বসলাম। সেই মেয়েটিই পথের পাঁচালি-র দুর্গা।”
